Seattle BioMed science director: Why unvaccinated 'freeloaders' like me are a huge risk to society

As I was sitting in the waiting room of my primary care physician last week, I couldn't help but appreciate the irony of that particular visit. I'm 51 years old, and I was there because I had just learned that I was never vaccinated against measles. I'm also the scientific director at Seattle BioMed where our work includes, among many things, vaccine advancement for infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. As a young child I was vaccinated against most of the common culprits – polio , smallpox, diphtheria, etc. –but, not the measles. Apparently, there was concern over an allergy.
